What is a Death Café?

A Death Café is an open, group-directed discussion designed to normalize conversations about death. These gatherings are held in a safe, confidential space, where anyone can join to share their thoughts, ask questions, or simply listen.

There are no agendas or themes—just an open invitation for honest discussions about life, death, and everything in between.

The goal of a Death Café is to reduce the stigma surrounding death, creating a “Death Positive” culture that encourages reflection, meaningful conversations, and, ultimately, living life more fully.

How We Normalize Death

  • All conversations are confidential, and everyone’s thoughts and feelings are respected.

  • There’s no pressure to speak; feel free to just listen, reflect, or share.

  • Regardless of your background, beliefs, or experiences, we encourage people from all walks of life to attend and share their perspectives.

Guide to Running Your Own Death Café

How to Host a Successful Death Café

It’s simple, flexible, and open to anyone who’s ready to talk about death.

Step-by-Step Breakdown:

  • The host is responsible for organizing the event and creating a welcoming space. The facilitator is responsible for guiding the conversation, ensuring that the discussion remains open and respectful.

  • Select a comfortable, accessible location (such as a café, community center, or even someone’s home) where people can relax and engage in a casual discussion. Choose a date and time that works well for your community.

  • Publicize your Death Café to ensure a great turnout. Share through social media, community groups, and your personal networks to invite people from all walks of life to join in.

  • Ensure that the environment is respectful and safe for all attendees. Discuss ground rules such as confidentiality, respectful listening, and openness to all views.

  • Death Café is about gathering over coffee, tea, and snacks. Offering light refreshments like cake, coffee, and cookies helps make the conversation comfortable and inviting. Make sure there are options for dietary preferences like vegetarian or vegan snacks.
